Painting jobs are simple and go rather quickly – it’s the prep work that takes a lot of time. This is because it lays out the foundation for having a professional looking job.
So, what does painting preparation entail? If you are looking for the steps to prepare for a big painting job, you are at the right place. In this brief article, I will bring you up to speed with the steps to follow while preparing for a big painting job.
Step 1. Clear everything within your working area/space
If you can, remove everything you can carry from your working area. If there are immovable items, cover and drape them using a plastic bags so that no single drop of paint can splatter on them. On the same note, do not forget to cover the switch boxes, doors and window panels.
Step 2. Sand off the rough patches or any loose paint
Use a sand paper to scrub and sand off rough patches on the surface you will paint. Then, you can use a putty knife to fill all crevices, wall blemishes and nail holes with Spackle. Once the Spackle dries dry, sand it off until you achieve smooth texture. Repeat the same process again to achieve the gold standard. This process is known as skimming.
Step 3. Clean the room
Dirt and dust embedded in paint is not appealing. Therefore, it’s now the high time to clean the room (working area) – most important being the walls, trim and baseboards. Use soft linen and clean water to clean the surfaces.
Step 4. Picking the paint
Always choose high quality paint and never compromise on it – the price of the paint is what reflects its quality. For interior walls, the Latex paints are the best choice. Glossy latex paints are usually easier to clean and more stain resistant, but they always show imperfections if painted unprofessionally. As a beginner, I would recommend that you consider starting with latex paints. However, no matter your choice of paint, you will need to apply two coats of paint to achieve a good looking result.
Step 5. Get a good paint rollers and high quality paintbrush
For big painting jobs, you need to use good paint rollers. These rollers are characterized by the size of their “nap”. A longer nap will hold more paint but it puts more texture on the wall – which is not appealing to the eyes. On the other hand, a short “nap” is good but you will take a longer time to finish the job. The best roller of choice for a big painting job is the one having a 9 inch width. Do not forget to get a good quality paint brush. The brush will come in handy when trying to paint areas where the roller is unable to paint e.g. corners, rims and edges.
Well, those are some of the steps to prepare for a big painting job. After completing the prep work, it is now time to start painting.
